COLLEGE STATION, TX -- Texas A&M’s Stefania Hristov has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week for women’s tennis, the league office announced today.

Hristov, from Iasi, Romania, opened the dual season by going a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles to lead Texas A&M to a 2-0 record and a berth into the prestigious ITA National Team Indoor Championship.

In the season opener against North Texas, Hristov and partner Cristina Stancu won their doubles match at the No. 1 line but the Aggies trailed, 1-0, after dropping the other two doubles matches. Hristov quickly put Texas A&M on the scoreboard and gave the Aggies the momentum once singles began with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory over Dane Joubert at the No. 6 line, and Texas A&M went on to win the match, 4-1.

In the championship match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center, Hristov and Stancu clinched the doubles point against Arizona in the last match standing. Hristov went on to record the overall match-winning point in singles, defeating Shayne Austin, 6-2, 7-6 (4) at No. 6 to secure the Aggies’ 4-0 victory over the Wildcats.

Hristov, whose No. 7 doubles ranking with Stancu is the highest in school history, improved to 15-4 overall in doubles, including 11-3 with Stancu. Hristov also improved to 8-6 overall in singles.

Hristov and the Aggies return to action Friday, Feb. 8, in the opening round of the ITA National Team Indoors Championship, to be hosted by the University of Virginia at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
