COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas A&M’s Cristina Stancu and Stefania Hristov conclude the fall season this week, competing in the talent-laden USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships, Thursday-Sunday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Stancu, a senior, received an automatic invitation to compete in the 32-player singles event after winning the ITA Texas Regional in Fort Worth last month. Stancu and Hristov, a sophomore, received an at-large bid to compete in the 20-team doubles draw.
"Stancu has performed as well as anyone in the country this fall,” A&M head coach Howard Joffe said. “Her inclusion in this event is a well-deserved treat, and hopefully Tina can enjoy and play some good tennis."
"Stefania has had a strong fall in singles but it has been overshadowed by the great doubles success. Hopefully Tina and Stef can play well. In that event they will be an awful tough team to upend.”
Doubles gets underway Thursday with four matches at 8 a.m. (CT). The Aggies’ Romanian duo received a first-round bye and will face the winner between 18th-ranked Tereza Bekerova and Paige Miles of Utah and 46th-ranked Sarah Lee and Ronit Yurovsky of Michigan in the round of 16 at 10 a.m. (CT).
Stancu and Hristov are 10-2 in doubles matches this fall and most recently won the USTA Clay Court Invitational in Orlando. The tandem, which reached the finals at the ITA Texas Regional in October, is making its second consecutive appearance in the tournament. Last year, Stancu and Hristov defeated Bekerova and Miles, 8-5, in the National Indoors consolation final.
In singles, 48th-ranked Stancu will open against Rachael Pierson, a freshman from Virginia who received an at-large entry after reaching the finals of the ITA Atlantic Regional. First serve is slated for 3:30 p.m. (CT).
Stancu, who also was an automatic qualifier in singles in 2011 after winning the ITA Atlantic Regional as a sophomore at Maryland, is 14-2 in singles matches this fall.
