Texas A&M’s Stancu Reaches Semifinals at ITA All-American Championships

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Texas A&M’s Cristina Stancu won her sixth consecutive match at the prestigious Riviera/ITA women’s All-American Championships today to advance to the semifinals at the Riviera Tennis Club.

By reaching the semifinals, the senior from Romania receives an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 7-10 in Flushing, N.Y.

Ranked No. 48 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, Stancu will face No. 1 seed and 2nd-ranked Robin Anderson of UCLA Saturday at 10 a.m. (PT), with the winner advancing to the championship match to be played Sunday.

Stancu won three consecutive matches in the qualifying draw earlier this week to advance to the main draw, where she opened with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over 17th-ranked Zoe Scandalis of USC in the round of 32. Stancu then topped 99th-ranked Maria Belaya of William and Mary in the round of 16, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals, where she defeated 25th ranked Emina Bektas of Michigan, 7-6 (1), 6-1.

“Tina has won a lot if matches thus far,” A&M coach Howard Joffe said. “It's not surprising now that her shoulder is healthy that she is in the final four of this event. Tina and Coach (Mark) Weaver have done excellent work out in California."

In doubles, Stancu and partner Stefania Hristov received an automatic bid in the main doubles draw and reached the quarterfinals before being eliminated. After receiving a bye in the round of 32, the No. 7 seeded tandem defeated Caroline Rohde-Moe and Marija Milutinovic of Ole Miss, 8-5, in the round of 16. The Aggies were then eliminated after falling to 20th-ranked Anderson and Jennifer Brady, 8-5, in the quarterfinals.
