COLLEGE STATION -- A local softball team already has a state championship under their belts, now they aim for another title.

The Texas Smash 10U softball team won seven games in one day to claim the ASA state championship last month, and Thursday they'll begin play at the VTD Gulf Regional World Series in Forney.

The team is one of 30 from Texas and Oklahoma at the event, and has won five of the eight tournaments they've entered this year.

They've had a month off since winning the ASA tournament in College Station, and they're ready to prove themselves again at an even higher level.

Head coach Billy Tramel said, ""I think our chances are really good. I think we're ready. The girls are confident, but not cocky, so they know they have to play their best to compete. You've got 30 of the best teams in the state of Texas that are going to be there, state of Texas and Oklahoma as well, so they know they have their hands full. But we can play with anybody."

The Smash will play the Strike Zone Knockouts from Belton in their first pool play game Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

The Brazos Valley Tigers are also in the tournament and will open pool play Thursday at 9:00 a.m. against Texas Glory.

The Tigers placed 9th at the ASA State tournament and have placed in the last eight tournaments they have participated in.
