Three victories turned in by Aggies on final day of USA Junior Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – Three victories for the Aggies highlighted the final day of the USA Junior Championships in addition to a runner-up effort. Texas A&M will have a total of seven athletes as part of the United States team that competes in the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain, from July 10-15.

Aggies claiming USA Junior titles on the final day of the meet were Aldrich Bailey, Olivia Ekponé and Jennifer Madu while Dalton Rowan recorded a second-place finish.

Bailey started the day off with a 45.37 victory in the 400 over the 45.77 by runner-up Arman Hall. Bailey, who set the national high school record earlier this season with a career best of 45.19, remains undefeated in outdoor finals this season.

The winning time for Baily is the second fastest in his career, trailing only the 45.19 he posted in Lubbock to win the Region I-5A title. Other victories this season have included District 5-5A (46.18), Texas 5A State title (45.92), Golden South Classic (45.58) and Golden West (47.57).

Ekponé ran down Dezerea Bryant, the USA Junior 100 champ, to capture the 200-meter title with a career best time of 23.18 while Bryant finished second in 23.30. Ekponé previously ran a personal best of 23.28 twice this season.

Madu, the runner-up to Bryant in the 100, won the triple jump on Sunday by three-quarters of an inch over Florida’s Ciarra Brewer, who was the SEC champion this season and recently placed fourth at the NCAA Championships.

Both jumpers produced their best mark in the second round. Brewer reached a distance of 42 feet, 9 inches (13.03) and then Madu bettered that performance with a 42-9.75 (13.05).

Rowan became the seventh Aggie to qualify for the World Junior Championships as he threw the junior discus 201-2 (61.32) as the runner-up to LSU’s Rodney Brown, who broke the meet record with a winning mark of 206-9 (63.01).

In the first round Rowan opened with a 200-10 (61.23) and then had a pair of fouls. In the final three rounds, Rowan hit his best mark in the fourth stanza and then followed with another pair of fouls.

Brown is now No. 3 on the all-time discus list with the junior implement while Rowan is No. 7.
