Two Aggies to Compete at World Amateur Championships

ANTALYA, Turkey – Junior Katerina Ruzickova and sophomore Patricia Garcia have been selected by the Czech Republic and Puerto Rico, respectively, to represent their country as they compete at the 25th Women’s World Amateur Team Team Championships this weekend.

The three-day event, which begins Thursday and runs through Sunday, features 157 players, representing 53 countries. Ruzickova and Garcia will each be competing in their first tournament of the season.

The championship will take place on the old and new courses at the Gloria Golf Resort in Antalya, Turkey, and consists of 72-hole stroke play. The “Old” Championship Golf Course is 18-holes, par-72, 6,759 yards, while the “New” Championship Golf Course is a 6,823 yard, par-72 with four lakes and 67 bunkers. In 2010, the last time the tournament was held, South Korea brought home the Women’s Espirito Santo Trophy, winning by an astounding 17 strokes.

Highly ranked and notable golfers competing in the championships this year are Hyo Joo Kim (Korea; ranked third by Women’s World Amateur Golf Rankings), Georgia Hall (England; ranked fourth), Minjee Lee (Australia; ranked sixth), Charley Hull (England; ranked ninth) and Breanna Elliot (Australia; ranked tenth).

Last season for Texas A&M, Ruzickova brought home All-America honors and ranked first on the team with a 73.48 average score while Garcia was third with a 75.53 average score.

The Aggies will return to action on Oct. 5-7 as they compete in the NCAA Fall Preview in Athens, Ga.
