Sam Houston Volleyball Falls in Southland Semifinals

Oral Roberts ended Sam Houston’s volleyball season in the semifinals of the Southland Conference post-season tournament Saturday afternoon, defeating the Bearkats 25-19 25-21 25-18.

The Bearkats, who shared the Southland regular season championship with host Central Arkansas, were the No. 2 seed in the tournament, but the No. 5 seeded Golden Eagles pulled off their second upset of the weekend. ORU defeated No.4 SFA in Friday’s first round.

Southland volleyball player of the year Deveney Wells-Gibson produced 15 of Sam Houston 39 kills to lead both squads. Kaylee Hawkins contributed nine kills and Kendall Cleveland added seven for Sam Houston.

Sheina Fernandez led ORU with eight kills.

Errors were key in the match with Sam Houston committing 37 errors on attacks, returns, blocks and serves while ORU had 19.

Tayler Gray assisted on 35 of the Bearkats 39 kills. Hawkins led the Kats defensively with 15 digs.

Oral Roberts took control early in each set. With the teams first 7-7 in the first, the Golden Eagles went on a 7-2 run to go up 14-9. ORU won the set 25-19.

In the second set, the teams were tied 14-14 but the Golden Eagles closed out the frame winning 11 of the final 18 points.

In the final set, the two were tied 12-12 but the Eagles went on to win 13 of the final 18 points to close out the Bearkats.

Sam Houston ended the season with a 21-11 overall record while ORU stands 17-14 headed into Sunday’s Southland volleyball finals.
