BRYAN, Texas -- New Rudder head football coach Will Compton met with players, parents, staff, and the media tonight as he gets set to take over as the second athletic coordinator in Ranger history.
Compton's last job was as offensive coordinator at Oak Ridge, where he helped the War Eagles turn things around and reach the playoffs a year ago.
He knows he'll have the same sort of challenge ahead of him at Rudder after the Rangers went 0-10 in 2013.
Compton said, "I think every job brings it's challenges, no matter if it's a top tier team or if it's a team that's had some struggles in the past and really needs to turn things around. I think that this job has a lot of potential and that's really what enticed me to come here."
Compton takes over for C.M. Pier, who coached the Rangers for six seasons and had a 13-43-1 record. He knows it will take work to get the Rangers back on track, beginning with the basics. "The first thing we've got to do is get into our character building phase," said Compton. "We're going to spend a week where we just get in the classroom and break down the nuts and bolts of what it takes to be a good athlete for Bryan Rudder in the future."
Compton has used the spread offense as an offensive coordinator over the past nine years. He will use it at Rudder, but does not know the specifics of his attack yet. "Obviously I have to sit down and evaluate the kids. You can say you're going to run this or say you're going to run that, but until you can actually get on the field you don't know exactly the details. We vary depending on the type of personnel we have. At Oak Ridge we had a tight end and a fullback. John Tyler we went four-wide and trips and doubles. It just depends on what type of kids we have."
