COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M junior Jackson Withrow was named the Southeastern Conference men’s tennis player of the week, the league office announced Wednesday morning.
The Omaha, Nebraska, native clinched Texas A&M’s upset victory over then seventh-ranked Georgia Friday with a three-set victory over 117th-ranked Nick Wood. Withrow and the Aggies handed Georgia its first conference loss of the season and combined with Sunday’s team victory over No. 20 Tennessee put A&M in a tie for first in the league standings. Friday’s match-clinching victory was Withrow’s second of the season.
Withrow completed a perfect week with a straight set victory over Tennessee’s Markus Kerner Sunday afternoon. Additionally, Withrow partnered with Junior Ore to push Tennessee’s top-ranked doubles team to the brink of defeat, leading 5-2 in the tie-breaker as A&M clinched the doubles point against the Vols on doubles court two.
Withrow looks to continue his three-match singles winning streak this weekend in contests against Alabama and Auburn which will conclude Texas A&M’s regular season home schedule. Stay tuned to AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieMTEN on Twitter for coverage of Texas A&M men’s tennis.
