Game 7 • Tuesday, December 3, 2013 • 7 p.m.
San Diego State Aztecs (1-4, 0-0 Mountain West) at
No. 23 Associated Press Texas A&M Aggies (4-2, 0-0 SEC)
COLLEGE STATION, Texas- No. 23 Texas A&M returns to Reed Arena for the first time since Nov. 13 on Tuesday to host 2013 Mountain West Champion San Diego State at 7 p.m. The game is designated as Dr. R. Bowen Loftin Appreciation Night, where the team will honor the school president, who is stepping down from that position in January.
A self-proclaimed "Student's President," all students receive free admission to the game, and the first 1,500 students in attendance receive a bowtie, honoring Dr. Loftin's signature neckwear.
The Aggies and Aztecs have only met three times, but the most important matchup came in San Diego during the Second Round of the 1994 NCAA Tournament, as the 13th-seeded Aggies knocked off the 5th-seeded Aztecs 75-72 in overtime. The win advanced Texas A&M to its first NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, and made the Aggies the lowest seed to ever advance to the Sweet 16, a record that still stands today.
On the court, the Aggies are playing their fourth game in six days, after a trip to the Paradise Jam. Courtney Walker averaged 17.0 points per game in the Paradise Jam, and was named to the All-Reef Division Team.
San Diego State is coming off of 1-4 start, but three of its losses have been by four-or-fewer points. The Aztecs come in under first-year head coach Stacie Terry, who is looking to take the Aztecs to their 13th postseason bid, after falling in the Mountain West Tournament a year ago.
After this game, the Aggies host Washington on Saturday, December 7 at 7 p.m. A banner honoring A&M Head Coach Gary Blair's induction to the Hall of Fame will be raised.
