News 3 Sports would like to congratulate our latest Classroom Champion, Aubrie King. The Mumford High School senior has a 4.26 GPA, and is currently ranked third in his class.
Aubrie is a member of the 2014 Class A State Champion Mumford basketball team; as well as the Mustang Baseball team. He will be only the 5th basketball player in history to be TABC 1st Team All-State all four years of high school. Aubrie was also the District 25-A Basketball MVP in 2011 and the TABC Division I Player of the Year in 2013. Last year in baseball, Aubrie was nominated to the Sportswriters All-State Team. Academically, he's a member to the National Honor Society and the One Act Play. Aubrie is also a member of the Mumford Band and the Mumford tennis team.
"Aubrie's is a very good student. He has a hard work ethic. He's also very talented as a student. His dedication as a student of course; is played out the same way on the field. He has the same attributes in the classroom...the competition...the hard work. His abilities and skills that he uses in the classroom; I';m sure he works on out in athletics."
"Aubrie was a major player for us every since he was a freshman. So back in the early days he was more f a lead by example type kid. One of the things we challenged him with as a coaching staff is as he became a senior, we needed him to step it up and be more vocal. And he accepted the challenge...And lead us to a state championship this year. So I think he was pretty successful in doing that."
For years he was the quirt kid. Who, if you were at little league baseball practice and you told them all to get in line and take ground balls. He would go get in the back of the line. And when it cam his turn he would do it perfect from watching everybody else, and seeing what they did right or wrong. But this year in basketball especially, I've really noticed he's being more of a vocal leader. Like talking more; trying to get people ready to play. I would say this year he's really taken a big step in his leadership abilities."
"I think having both my parents being high school coaches and teachers...You know that was instilled I me early that you have to do your best both in the classroom, and on the court, or on the field, or whatever sport your playing. I do it you kn ow just a s a pride thing if more than anything. You don't want to go out there and give an half effort and not get the recognition that you should; or achieve what you should. You don't want to come in second because of your own fault."
After high school, Aubrie is attending St. Edwards University in Austin, on a full athletic and academic scholarship. He is currently undecided on his major.
Congratulations to Aubrie King of Mumford High School. This week's News 3 Sports Classroom Champion!
