BRYAN, Texas — The Rams return a good chunk of a team that has come up just short of a state title the past two seasons. Head coach Jason Jolly said, “We have a dedicated group of young men who are hungry for a state championship. They will do anything I ask them to do and I know I will always get 100% out of them.”
Cody Vega returns at quarterback after a sea-son in which he was first-team all-state and MVP of the TCAL All-Star game. Vega is joined by second-team all-state performer Carter Kacal in the backfield, wide receivers Gareth Prescott and Caleb Phil-lips, and center Clint Duewal on an offense that averaged nearly 47 points per game. “We will need to improve our goal line offense and the timing between our quarter-back and receivers,” said Jolly.
The Ram 3-2-1 defense returns four starters with Vega, Kacal, and Phillips in the backfield and senior Grant Rhoads on the line. Allen Academy will also welcome back senior Clay DeJong on the line. He returns to football after playing club hockey his sophomore and junior seasons.
The Rams schedule looks to be a tough one, with no bye weeks and games against two defending state champions. The Rams host TAPPS Division I champ Dallas Covenant to begin the season and will host Waco Live Oak Classical five weeks later. Despite the slate, Jolly says the Rams have one goal this season: “Win the state championship. Period.”
