BRYAN, Texas -- The Huntsville Hornets overcame an early deficit to beat Rudder 42-23 and pick up their first victory of the season.
Rain the area kept the bands and many fans at home, but the two teams played hard on a wet field at Merrill Green Stadium.
Rudder took the early lead on a Robert Lee 10-yard touchdown run, but Huntsville answered with a defensive score. Michael Pena recovered a fumble in the end zone to tie the game at seven.
The Rangers went back ahead when Brady Batten hit Isaiah Johnson on a screen, and Johnson outran the Hornets 70-yards to put Rudder up 14-7.
However, Huntsville scored the next two touchdowns, including a Malik Brown to Christain Champine 58-yard scoring strike to put the Hornets ahead to stay. The Hornets led 28-16 at the half and added two second half rushing touchdowns to put the game away.
Huntsville (1-3, 1-1) hosts Magnolia next Friday. Rudder (0-4, 0-2) will visit Caney Creek.
