HEMPSTEAD, TX -- LaQuinton Sargent had a first half interception and touchdown reception as the Hempstead Bobcats beat West Columbia 32-17 Friday night. Sargent's pick came on Columbia's second offensive possession and set up a 1 yard touchdown run by Will Smith for a 6-0 win.
With the Bobcats up 6-2 in the second quarter, Smith and Sargent hook up on a 35 yard scoring strike to make it 12-2 at the half. Hempstead (4-1) will outscore the Roughnecks 20-15 in the second half to post a 32-17 win.
Hempstead will have next Friday off and step back on the field for its 14-2A Division 1 opener against Edna Cowboys on the road.
