Over the years Bryan High and A&M Consolidated teams have put their fair share of miles in traveling for district football games.
For the next two seasons they'll have some trips east to Livingston, Huntsville, Caney Creek, and Willis, but the big news is all four B/CS high schools are in the same district in 18-5A.
College Station head coach Steve Huff said, "I think there's been a lot of talk for a long time about whether this was going to happen, where the Bryan schools would lie as far as enrollment, and it all kind of lined up this time and it's good. I think it's great for the community."
"Should be a heck of a games next year in town with both Rudder, Bryan, and then College Station high school," added A&M Consolidated head coach David Raffield. "There'll be some excitement."
Most folks thought the B/CS four would be paired with Brenham and either the two Magnolia or Tomball schools, but that didn't happen. The 2013 state runner-up Cubs will play in 19-5A against the Tomball and Magnolia schools and a pair of Houston schools in Stratford and Spring Woods, but the UIL threw District 18 a curve ball by including Livingston.
Bryan head coach Ross Rogers said, "Livingston was a total surprise, and probably a surprise to them too. I thought there was a chance that Huntsville, Willis, and Caney Creek would be with us, I just never thought about Livingston."
New Rudder head coach Will Compton added, "I believe it's 96 miles from the high school to Livingston, so that will be a trek, but it's going to be a fun atmosphere in Bryan/College Station with all schools."
While travel won't be as much of an issue now for Bryan/College Station schools here in Navasota they're getting ready to put some more miles on the buses. The Rattlers join District 11-4A Division I with Houston Furr, Houston Sterling, Houston Washington, Houston Wheatley, and now their closest district rival Sealy 50 miles away.
Navasota head man Lee Fedora said, "It's not so much the distance it's when you get in that traffic when you're wanting to be at a game at two hours before time at 5:30. How do you handle that? Do you leave two hours early or do you get caught up in that Houston traffic?"
No Houston traffic to battle for Madisonville. The Mustangs are in District 8-4A Division two with Cleveland Tarkington, Coldspring, Diboll, Huntington, and Shepherd.
Looking west at District 11-4A Division II you will find Caldwell, Giddings, La Grange, Salado, and Smithville.
Defending state champion Cameron Yoe's biggest rival will join them in District 10-3A Division I, as the Battle for the Bell with Rockdale will now be a district game. The Tigers drop a classification and join the Yoemen, along with Florence, Lago Vista, Little River-Academy, and Troy.
Plenty of good rivalries will resume in 12-3A Division II, including the Robertson County Rumble between Franklin and Hearne, who are in the same district again after a two-year hiatus. Buffalo, Leon, Lexington, New Waverly, and Trinity round out the district.
The Centerville Tigers and Anderson-Shiro Owls drop a class, and will join Groveton, Hull-Daisetta, Lovelady, and West Hardin in 12-2A Division I.
Plenty of ground to cover for rivals Iola and Normangee in 12-2A Division II, as they will have to travel three plus hours to the coast to face Sabine Pass in a district contest. Burkeville, Colmesneil, and Evadle make up the rest of the monstrosity.
A lot of good local matchups in 13-2A Division II, made up of Bartlett, Bremond, Burton, Granger, Milano, Snook, and Somerville.
And last but not least 6-man football, which is now called class 1A. Calvert will have some long bus trips to High Island and Prairie Lea and a short one to Buckholts for District 16 play.
It all means a lot of travel for a lot of area teams. The first day of practice is August 4. The first games can be played August 28.
