BRYAN, Texas -- Connor Chesky of Saint Helena, Calif., and Nathan Jeansonne of Keithville, La., shot a 3-under-par 69 for a two-way tie for the lead after the first round of the Goodman Networks Junior at Traditions. In the Girls Division, Emily Gillman of Austin, Texas, leads heading into the second round at 2-under-par 70.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Goodman Networks Junior at Traditions is a 54-hole stroke play competition played on the par-72 course at Traditions Club at Texas A&M. The event features 88 boys and 42 girls, ages 12-18, from 19 states and eight countries. The Boys Division is playing the course at 7,001 yards while the Girls Division is playing the course at 6,172 yards.

Chesky powered through the first round, making several par saving putts and finishing with no bogeys. He picked up three birdies, including two on the last holes of the day.

“Throughout the round I played pretty well, hitting the right spots on the greens,” Chesky said. “I didn’t shoot a bogey all day so overall I’m really pleased. I’m excited to be in a good position going into tomorrow and I’m ready to stay focused and play like I did today.”

Jeansonne started the round with an eagle on his first hole before picking up five birdies in his last six holes and carding a 5-under-par 31 on his back nine.

“I holed out for an eagle on my first hole so my front nine took off pretty well,” Jeansonne said. “I started to hit the ball even better on the back nine with shots hitting greens and putts dropping. Heading into tomorrow I just want to stay patient, not get ahead of myself, and see what happens.”

Ryan Grider of Lewisville, Texas, and Sam Bennett of Madisonville, Texas, posted a 1-under par 71 and are currently sitting in third place heading into the second round. Cooper Dossey of Austin, Texas, Tony Gil of Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, Zach Partin of Lewisville, Texas, Sergio Amieiro of Mexico City, Mitchell Meissner of San Antonio, and Robert Rickard of Austin, Texas, shot even-par 72 in a six-way tie for fifth.

In the Girls Division, Gillman started strong with three birdies on the front nine. She added a fourth birdie on No. 16 to shoot the low first round at 2-under-par 70.

“I took advantage of the greens I hit and had a few long putts to save some holes and make par,” Gillman said. “I know I’m sitting in good position for tomorrow and I want to keep it that way, so I’m planning on taking it one shot at a time and playing each hole as best as I can.”

Jordy LaBarbera of Allen, Texas, and Ashley Malinchak of Parkland, Fla., are tied for second after carding a 1-under-par 71 in the first round.

Second-round tee-times will run from 8:15-9:55 a.m. and 12:45-2:25 p.m. off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees at Traditions Club at Texas A&M. For more information, please contact Tournament Headquarters at (770) 825-1001.
