WACO, Texas -- The Lady Cougar soccer team took another step in the 4A state playoffs Friday night in Waco by defeating the Lampasas Badgers 5-1. Ten minutes into the match, Lauren Spohn took a pass at the top of the 18.
She played it wide to Maddie Kothmann, who fired a shot past the Badger keeper to make the score 1-0 Cougs. Four minutes later Maddie Jenkins placed a corner kick right on Jaylen Hinckley's head, who buried it in the back of the net.
Three minutes after that, Bailey Scherr had a breakaway on the right side of the box when she was tackled by a Badger defender. Hinckley scored the ensuing penalty kick to make it a 3-0 Cougar lead.
With six minutes remaining to halftime, College Station attacker Emily Guerrieri was tripped in the area from behind by a Lampasas defender. Reagan Martin converted the penalty shot to make it a 4-0 halftime lead.
One minute into the second half the Cougars were called for a foul in the area, and Badger standout Analise Watson converted the penalty kick. Steele Fancher scored the final goal of the match for the Cougars, blasting in a shot from the top of the 18 off of a corner kick.
With the win, the Cougars earn their 20th win of the season and advance to the regional quarterfinals for the second time in as many years. The Cougs will play Port Neches-Groves on Tuesday at a time and site to be determined.
