HEARNE, Texas -- The Hearne Eagles were able to drive into the Rosebud-Lott Red Zone five times in the first half but only came away with 7 points. That failure to capitalize on their first half opportunities cost them an 11-2A Division II win as the Cougars prevailed 27-19.
Rosebud-Lott intercepted an Eagle pass inside their 10 yard line on Hearne's opening possession and turned the miscue into points. Andrew Moore caps off the drive with a 14 yard run giving Rosebud-Lott a 7 to nothing lead.
Later in the first quarter, Hearne inside the Red Zone and looking to tie things up at 7, but Devanta Jefferson fumbles the ball out of end zone and Rosebud Lott survives another Eagle Red Zone encounter.
Hearne Head Coach Clinton T. Smith can't believe his team's luck. They are able to find the end zone in the 2nd quarter thanks to a MarcJavion McGrew 5 yard run to tie the game at 7. Two more drives ended in the RBL Red Zone thanks to 4th down plays that didn't keep drives alive.
Rosebud-Lott will take advantage of those missed Hearne opportunities and grab a 14-7 lead thanks to a 53 yard touchdown run by Cougar quarterback Artis Johnson. Later in the quarter Johnson throws a 41 yard touchdown pass to D.J. Johnson giving the visitors a 21-7 halftime lead.
Hearne will score a couple of touchdowns in the second half, but the damage is done. Hearne can't climb out of the hole on homecoming night at Wood Field and lose it 27-19.
Hearne (1-4, 0-2) will be on the road next Friday as they travel to Riesel to take on the Indians.
