ALVIN, Texas -- The Rudder Boys' Gymnastics Team went wire to wire at the State Gymnastics Meet in Alvin winning the school's second state championship by 5.45 points over two time defending state champion Saginaw.
After grabbing first place in the Compulsories on Thursday with 174.6 points, they backed it up with 163.75 points in the Optional round to claim the boy's state title.
Rudder High School claimed its first state championship in boys' gymnastics back in 2011.
Rudder senior Taylor Fletcher was a freshman on that team and 'book ends" his career with another state championship. Taylor won the All Around State Championship edging his brother Tim, who is a freshman on the team by 2.45 points.
Taylor won individual state championships on the Pommel Horse, Floor Exercise, Still Rings, and the Parallel Bars. He captured a silver in the Vault, and on the High Bar.
Tim won the individual state championship on the High Bar. He finished 2nd on the Still Rings, 3rd in the Floor, 4th on the Parallel Bars, 5th on the Horse, and 9th in the vault.
Rudder High's Dylan Powers claimed 5th on the Parallel Bars.
This is the 8th state championship that Head Coach J.T. Fletcher has won at Bryan ISD. He won 6 at Bryan High before transferring the gymnastics program to Rudder. While they are all special this one might rank number one since he had two sons on the team (Taylor & Tim).
Rudder Ranger Gymnastics Team wins school's second state championship with 5.45 point win over two time defending state champion Saginaw Friday night in Alvin.
Rudder Boys' Head Gymnastics Coach J.T. Fletcher presents his son Taylor with the All Around Title. His son Tim came in 2nd in the All Around competition.
