BRYAN, Texas The Rudders Rangers dropped their season opener 49-3 to Elgin Friday night at Merrill Green Stadium.
The Wildcats scored on the opening possession of the game. Da'Trean Simmons scored on a 20 yard touchdown run to cap off the opening drive. Te'Rel Simmons pushed the Elgin lead to 14-0 with a six yard touchdown run. That was the score after one quarter.
The Wildcats would outscore Rudder 21-3 in the second quarter to grab a 35-3 halftime lead. Elgin would add two more scores in the second half to cap off a 49-3 win. Rudder head coach C.M. Pier says his team did not play well up front. "We made some mistakes early. They jumped on us, the option attack gave us some issues we didn't play that right early. The bottom line is tonight we didn't play well on the line of scrimmage. They played extremely well on the line of scrimmage and that is definitely something we have to address."
Rudder will return to action September 6 when they hit the road to take on El Campo. Rudder lost to El Campo 55-26 last season.
