MUMFORD, Texas -- Mumford boys' head basketball coach Chris Sodek is leaving the Mustang program to become the head boys' basketball coach and Assistant Principal at Flatonia ISD. Sodek was offered an assistant principal job at Mumford ISD but the move to Flatonia was a chance for he and his wife to get closer to home. Both are from Fayette County.
Sodek has spent 13 years at Mumford, 12 years as the Mustangs head coach. His record was 288-107. It is the only job Sodek has held since graduating from Texas A&M in 2001.
He took Mumford to the State Basketball Tournament in 2012, 2013, and 2014. The Mustangs beat Muenster this year to win the Class 1A Division 1 State Championship. Mumford finished the season 39-1.
Sodek's Assistant Coach Alvie King is also leaving Mumford. He is going to teach Physical Education at Milano Elementary School. King is also the Head Baseball Coach at Mumford.
Mumford Superintendent Pete J. Bienski Jr. said the district is in the process of accepting applications for both the boys' head basketball coach and the head baseball coach. Bienski hopes to have a basketball coach in place in the next two to three weeks.
