* - District Game
NORMANGEE, Texas -- Normangee will have five starters back on offense and eight returning on defense to a team hungry to get back to the postseason.
Sophomore Ty Jordan takes over as the starting quarterback, and he has two great weapons at his disposal in junior running back Bryson Cornish and junior receiver Austin Aguirre. “We will be able to count on our skill position kids,” said Morton. “We will need to show improvement on the offensive and defensive lines.” Center and Nose Guard Blake Shaw will be the anchor on both lines after earning all-district honors at both positions last season.
The Panthers non-district schedule features games at home sandwiched around three on the road, including a tough one at 2013 state semifinalist Mart in week two. Normangee will get to play three of the games that really count at home, however, as they move from a four-team district the past few seasons to a six-team district in 2014 and 2015. “We have some long road trips in this district, but I feel we will be able to win more games. The teams aren’t as strong as the ones we have been playing in Chilton, Bremond, and Lovelady,” said Morton. Of the new opponents Colmesneil, Evadale, and Iola reached the postseason a year ago while Burkeville and Sabine Pass combined to win just one game. The Panthers district opener against Colmesneil and the season finale at rival Iola could go a long way in deciding a district champion.
