JEWETT, Texas -- The Cougars jump up a class, but have the returning talent to take on the higher level of competition and compete for a playoff spot.

Keith Sitton has seven starters back on offense and eight returning on a defense he says is, “the best we’ve fielded in the last 7 to 10 years.” The Cougars also get a key addition to the coaching staff in Mark Read, the former head coach at rival Buffalo. Peyton Archibald is penciled in as the starting quarterback after moving from fullback to start the last three games of 2013, but current fullback Corbin Watson may also see some time under center. Whoever throws the ball will have two good receivers to work with in Riley Noey and Bradley Berryhill. The offensive line returns just one starter, but key returnees with experience will help fill the holes. Hunter Vestal moves from guard to tight end this year on offense, but also returns to lead the Cougars 4-2-5 defense at linebacker. Sitton said, “We will be able to count on our defensive consistency this season and hopefully have a more consistent offense.”

The Cougars join a tough District 12-3A Division II that features state powers Franklin and Lexington. “It’s a tough district that is extremely athletic,” said Sitton. “We will have to play every week as there is not a sure win on the schedule. If we stay healthy we have a great opportunity to start fast like last year and compete for a playoff spot, but our mental toughness must be better to fight through rough patches of games.”
