* - District Game
BURTON, Texas -- Burton should be poised to contend for another district title with seven starters coming back on defense and six more returning on offense.
Louis Brown is the Panther everybody will have their eyes on. Brown committed to Texas in July, but also had offers from Baylor, Oregon, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Texas Tech, and Washington among others and is coming off a unanimous all-state season. He will be a force both on the Panther offense at tailback and at defensive end.
Luke Huffer takes over for Jon Colburn under center, and will have a promising receiver to throw to in sophomore Donnell Patter-son and a pair returning starters on the line in guard Brandon Salinas and center Jayden-Ray Eckermann. Brown, Huffer, Eckermann, and Austin Langley anchor the line of the Burton 50 defensive scheme. Salinas is the only returning linebacker, but Patterson and Jamon Bradley are back in the secondary.
“We will be able to count on team speed and athleticism,” said head coach Jason Hodde. “Fans should expect to see an athletic, scrappy team with some youth and enthusiasm.”
Burton opens a tough non-district slate season against 2013 playoff teams Thorndale and Chilton before visiting Louise and 3A Hearne. District play begins with an improving Snook squad, then games against Milano and Bremond that could ultimately decide the 13-2A Division II champion. With Brown doing work on both sides of the ball, expect the Panthers to reach the playoffs yet again in 2014.
