MADISONVILLE, Texas -- Madisonville looks to make it back-to-back trips to the postseason as they welcome back five starters on offense and three starters on defense.
Jaylen Smith is back under center to lead the Mustangs I-formation offense. However, the offensive line is a concern for Coach Morgan. “We only return two starters on the line, Oskar Garcia and Jabrae Burns. We have to find guys ready to play quickly. Depth at running back is also a concern.” The Mustangs lose the powerful Dontae Crist in the backfield, and will need to find a replacement to go along with fullback Don Roundtree. R’Kelian Wiley is the lone returning starter at wide receiver.
On defense Madisonville has the most returning experience on the line in defensive ends Austin Ashley and Tyji Whaley. “We will be able to count on the quickness of our defense,” said Morgan.
The Mustangs change regions and districts in the new UIL realignment, facing teams more to the east in 8-4A Division II. The new district looks like one Madisonville should con-tend in, as Coldspring and Shepherd are the only two teams coming off winning seasons. Tarkington, Diboll, and Huntington combined to go 2-27 a year ago. “We expect to contend for a district champion-ship with Coldpring in Week 10,” said Morgan. Win or lose that contest, expect the Mustangs to return to the postseason once again in 2014.
