The Sam Houston baseball team welcomes the Baylor Bears to Don Sanders Stadium for a midweek matchup Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Bearkats (21-11, 6-6 SLC) are 2-1 this year against Big IX conference opponents, with wins over Texas Christian and Texas Tech.

The Kats got back to winning ways in league play last weekend at Oral Roberts. After dropping Friday’s game SHSU came back to win Saturday and Sunday to take the series. Sam Houston has won its last two midweek games after previously dropping three straight.

“Last weekend was an absolute great series win for us on the road against a very good team,” head coach David Pierce said. “They have very good starting pitching, a very good closer and they have a little punch in the middle of their lineup. I thought we played really well this weekend.”

Baylor was swept in three games on the road at Texas but the Bears have won their last two midweek games, both against Incarnate Word last week. BU is batting just .224 as a team while the pitching staff boasts a 3.67 ERA.

The Bearkats and Bears have played 96 times since 1953 and Baylor holds a 59-37 advantage. The two teams split a pair of games last season, winning on each other’s home field.

Dylan Ebbs is scheduled to make just his second career start on the mound after he picked up the win last week against McNeese, allowing just one run on four hits in seven innings.

Lefthander Daniel Castano will get the start for Baylor. The freshman has a 2.45 ERA in 33 innings pitched. Castano has made four starts and pitched eight times in relief.

“We like to play these types of teams. It’s good for us,” Pierce added. “Baylor is coming off of a tough weekend against Texas and it’s going to be a challenge for us. They can pitch and they’re a little bit of a different team offensively than in the past. We really like having these midweek games that continue to prepare us for better teams.”

Catcher Anthony Azar has provided some power in the middle of the Bearkat lineup with seven home runs and 26 RBI this season. Center fielder Colt Atwood leads the Southland with 47 hits. Atwood is batting .353 with 26 RBI and a team-high 24 runs scored.

Sam Houston will host Abilene Christian for a three game league series this weekend. The two teams haven’t played since 2002 and haven’t played regularly since the 1970s.
