NAVASOTA, Texas -- Navasota High School hired former Rattler and former Texas A&M wide receiver Gaston Lamascus as its new wide receiver coach.
“I was very excited to be hired here,” said Lamascus, who graduated Navasota in 2009 and from Texas A&M last December. “Navasota has a great program with great coaches. It has great students and players.”
Many said Lamascus was too small to play at the collegiate level, but that all changed when then-Aggie coach Mike Sherman called Navasota coach Lee Fedora.
“What I told coach Sherman about Gator was, ‘Coach, he’s not going to mind if he has to be a walk-on, he’ll go out there and play receiver for you, he’ll deep snap for you and he’ll drive a bus for you,’” Fedora said. “It doesn’t matter, he’s going to give 100 percent effort to the team.”
So Sherman took a chance.
Lamascus was a four-year walk-on in the 2009-12 seasons and got the biggest surprise of his life as fall camp ended last August. He received the final walk-on scholarship the team gave.
“I grew up coming to the games and loving football,” Lamascus said in an interview last October with The Examiner. “Being on scholarship here was one of my goals.”
Lamascus will be in charge of a wide receiver corps that’s loaded with speed and experience, and a team that’s most likely going to be ranked in the top 10 in state preseason polls.
He has a great familiarity with his new pupils as he’s already coached them in summer 7-on-7 leagues from JV up until now. But now, they won’t call him “Gator” anymore, a name he’s had since he was a kid.
“I told everyone they have to start calling him Coach Lamascus,” Fedora said.
Lamascus graduated with a degree in University Studies and completed his social studies requirements to teach history.
“We’re excited to have Gaston here,” Fedora said. “He’s come through the system and knows our expectations. Plus, being the guy who wasn’t supposed to make it at the college level, he knows how to overcome adversity in life.”
Lamascus is replacing the void left by Greg Faigle, who Fedora said left because of family.
