Matt Armstrong has joined Sam Houston head coach Tom Brown’s soccer staff as an assistant coach. The former Notre Dame and New Mexico stand out player was a member of the staff at Oklahoma in 2013.

A former Middlesbrough FC Academy player and youth international, Armstrong also spent a season as an assistant coach on the men's soccer staff at UNLV. He served as an undergraduate assistant at New Mexico (2011) and guided the U-17 boys' team Rio Vista United in Albuquerque to a state championship.

“I am excited that Matt will be working with us going forward,” Brown said. “He played at a very high level as a midfielder and will work with our attacking players.”

As a player, he was a member of four NCAA Tournament teams and was named to the Soccer America and College Soccer News All-Freshman teams. He was also an honorable mention All-Big East pick as a freshman at Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish reached the NCAA tournament all three seasons that Armstrong was on the squad, including a quarterfinals appearance in 2007 and second round appearances in 2008 and 2009.

Armstrong wrapped up his collegiate career at New Mexico in 2010, leading the Lobos to the second round of the NCAA Tournament as a senior. After receiving his degree from UNM, he played professionally for HFC Haarlem in Holland and E.C. Vitoria in Bahia, Brazil.

Armstrong was at Middlesbrough FC Academy as a U-15 and U-16 player. He went from the Northeast of England into residence with the U-17 USA National Team in Bradenton, Fla. in 2005. He was in the Copa Sudamerica squad that competed in Paraguay and the squad that went to CONCACAF Qualifying in Costa Rica for the U-17 World Cup in 2005 (Peru).
