The Sam Houston softball team extended its winning streak to seven games with 2-1 and 7-0 victories over Houston Baptist Saturday afternoon.

The two teams will meet in the third and final game of the Southland series at 1 p.m. Sunday at Huskey Field.

Sam Houston collected 20 hits in the two games with right fielder Cecilia Castillo and first baseman Sarah Allison each picking up four hits on the day. The Bearkats now stand 22-17 for the year and 11-5 in Southland action.

Second baseman Allysa Coggins produced the game-winning single in the top of the sixth inning and senior Shelby Lancaster tossed a four-hitter in the opening 2-1 win.

Kirsten Schwirtlich put HBU on the board with a solo home run in the top of the first inning.

Center fielder Jessica Slater singled and tied the game 1-1 in the top of the third inning, scoring on a throwing error by the Huskies’ center fielder.

Designated player Hillary Adams walked in the top of the sixth inning. Pinch runner Jennie Kieval reached second base on a passed balled and scored the winning run on Coggins’ single.

Consecutive doubles by third baseman Tori Koerselman, shortstop Tayler Gray and Castillo in the top of the first inning gave the Kats a strong start in the nightcap.

Allison smashed a three-run homer to give Sam Houston a 5-0 lead before HBU ever came to bat.

The Kats added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning on a run-scoring double by catcher Tiffany Castillo and another RBI single by Coggins.

Haley Baros was the winning pitcher in the second game. Lancaster now owns a 7-5 record in the circle while Baros stands 9-8.
