COLLEGE STATION - The Texas State 7-on-7 Football Tournament will start a new streak in Aggieland in 2015.
The high school tournament's organizers have announced they will return to College Station's Veterans Park next year from July 9-11.
"The people we work with and the locals make such a big difference for everyone," said Doug Stephens, the tournament's executive director, in a statement. "The people that come to this come from not just across the state, but from across the country. And they've had to work with other cities or other tournaments, so they know when they're being treated well."
In 1998 when the tournament began, it was held on the campus of Texas A&M, where it stayed through 2012. When the Aggies joined the Southeastern Conference, league rules stated they could not continue to host the high schoolers on campus.
After spending 2013 in the Round Rock area, the Bryan-College Station Convention and Visitors Bureau's successfully led the effort to bring the tournament back to College Station, this time off campus in Veterans Park.
"We're more than excited that they have picked our community as the host site once again," said Kindra Fry, the vice president of sales and marketing at the CVB, in the statement. "This is one of those premier sports events we love having here not only because of the economic impact, but also because it gives us a chance to expose our great cities to thousands of new visitors."
The CVB estimates there were more than 13,000 visitors for the 2014 event in addition to the more-than-2,500 participants. Hotels were sold out for the tournament.
"Things like a central location help in the decision, but it's a credit to the CVB and cities for what they do to make it special," Stephens said.
