COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M athletics program is currently in 14th place in the 2013-14 Division I Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup second winter rankings. The Aggies have finished in the Top 10 the past four years in the final year-end rankings. (6th in 2009-10, 8th in 2010-11, 9th in 2011-12, and 5th in 2012-13)
The most recent rankings included points for men’s and women’s basketball, fencing, women’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s swimming and diving as well as wrestling.
Coach Steve Bultman along with diving head coach Jay Lerew and the Texas A&M women’s swimming and diving team finished fourth at the recent NCAA Championships earning 80 points.
Coach Gary Blair and the women’s basketball team reached the Elite 8 in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championships earning 73 points for a fifth place finish.
Coach Jay Holmes and the men’s swimming and diving program finished 44th at the NCAA Championships recording 17 points.
In the first winter standings, Texas A&M and head track and field coach Pat Henry posted a fifth place finish in the women’s indoor track and field championships earning 75 points while the men’s indoor track and field program posted an eighth place finish earning 69 points.
The Aggie fall sports posted 198 points and added to the winter total of 314 provides the total of 512 points in the standings.
The next winter rankings will be released next Thursday, Apr. 17 as the championships for women’s bowling, men’s gymnastics and men’s ice hockey will be included. The final winter standings will be posted on Apr. 24 when women’s gymnastics is added.
The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup takes into consideration the top 10 female sports and the top 10 male sports at each institution. In Texas A&M’s case, the school sponsors 20 intercollegiate sports, 11 female and nine male.
