BRYAN, Texas — Battling cold and rainy conditions junior Greg Yates carded a final round of 69 Sunday at Traditions Club to lift the Texas A&M men’s golf team to a share of the team title at the 2014 Aggie Invitational.

The Aggies (297-295-307=899) tied SEC-running mate LSU (298-293-308-899) atop the leaderboard at 35-over par while Texas Tech (302-295-306=903, +39) finished in a close third place.

“Obviously, we’re happy that we’re standing here champions and that we were able to catch up and tie LSU to bring home a trophy, but on the other hand I don’t think we played all that great,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “Anytime you have to count an 85, there is some weakness there, so we’ve got to get better. I thought for the most part we did a really good job of fighting hard all day. The guys were battling against some really adverse conditions and did a great job of keeping it together.

Yates (74-72-69=215, -1) was impressive during Sunday’s final round, turning in the day’s lowest scorecard (69, -3) that featured four birdies and no bogeys during his last nine holes. The Mansfield, Texas, native recorded his third top-five finished of the year, ending play in second place overall and just three shots behind individual medalist Brandon Hagy (71-70-71=212, -4) of Cal.

“In all honestly, we won today because of Greg Yates,” Higgins added. “To shoot a 69 in those conditions was incredible. On the back nine he shot a bogey-free 32 and really put the team on his shoulders and brought it home for us.”

Rain fell off and on throughout much of the day’s early action, including a 25-minute delay caused by standing water on the greens.

Aggie sophomore Ben Crancer (71-72-76=219, +3) was four-over on the day to finish in fourth place and notch his fifth career top-five finish.

Competing as an individual, junior Ty Dunlap (78-72-74=224, +8) finished with a share of 10th place, marking the sixth career top-10 finish for the Westlake, Texas, native.

Rounding out the A&M line-up, sophomore Andrew Lister (76-75-77=228, +12) earned 24th place while Adrià Arnaus (76-76-85=237, +21) and Johannes Veerman (88-83-91=262, +46) finished 48th and 71st, respectively.

Sophomore Charlie Benell and seniors Ryan Kelley and Jade Scott also competed for Texas A&M as individuals.

The tournament was the Aggies’ final tune-up before postseason play, which will begin April 25-27 when Texas A&M travels to Sea Island, Ga., for the SEC Championship.
