COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M women’s tennis team climbed three spots to a season-high No. 5 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings released today.

The No. 5 showing betters the team’s previous season-high No. 7 ranking received five times this year.

With the Aggie men’s tennis team moving up three spots to No. 8, Texas A&M joins Georgia, UCLA and Virginia as the only four teams in the nation to have both their men’s and women’s programs ranked in the top 10.

The Aggie women made the jump after going 2-1 at the SEC Women’s Tennis Championship last weekend in Columbia, Mo., including a 4-3 victory over then-No. 4 Florida to reach the tournament semifinals. A&M fell to No. 3 Alabama, 4-2, in the semifinal match.

A&M is one of three SEC teams ranked in the top 5 this week. Georgia, which won the SEC Tennis Championship, is No. 2, and SEC regular-season champion Alabama is No. 3. Florida and Vanderbilt are in the top 10 at No. 8 and 10, respectively.

In the individual rankings, A&M’s Cristina Stancu climbed three spots to No. 8 in singles, matching her career high. The senior from Romania is 15-3 in dual matches and will enter the NCAA Championship riding a 13-match win streak.

Aggie freshman Saska Gavrilovska and sophomore Ines Deheza also are in the singles rankings. Gavrilovska climbed six spots to No. 57 after going 3-0 at the SEC tournament to improve to 15-4 in dual matches and extend her win streak to six matches.

Deheza’s No. 88 ranking is a career high, and it is her first appearance in the singles rankings since a No. 106 showing in the Sept. 6 preseason fall rankings. Deheza made the jump into the rankings after upsetting eighth-ranked Olivia Janowicz of Florida in the Aggies’ SEC quarterfinal victory over the Gators. It marked Deheza’s highest ranked win of her career.

In doubles, Stancu and sophomore partner Stefania Hristov moved up four spots to No. 12, their highest ranking of the spring season.

Deheza and Gavrilovska are No. 88 in doubles, and freshman Rutuja Bhosale and sophomore Anna Mamalat are No. 90 in their first-ever appearance in the doubles rankings.

The Aggies (19-6) now await the NCAA Tennis Selection Show and the announcement of the 64-team NCAA Championship field on Tuesday, April 29. The men’s selection show will begin at 4 p.m., and the women’s selections will be revealed at 4:30 p.m. only on NCAA.com. Last year, the A&M women were seeded an all-time high No. 3 and reached the championship match for the first time in school history.

Singles and doubles selections will be released on the NCAA website after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30.
