ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — Junior Greg Yates collected seven birdies Saturday to lead the Texas A&M men’s golf team as the Aggies sit in 11th place after 36 holes at the SEC Championship.

Yates (72-67=139, -1) rebounded after two consecutive bogeys on his first two holes to turn in the day’s second lowest scorecard at Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course. The strong showing propelled the Mansfield, Texas, native into a tie for eighth place on the individual leaderboard.

“Greg played awesome today,” Texas A&M head Coach J.T. Higgins said. “He was hitting the ball well and making putts. He really put us on his back and carried our team. Thank goodness, because we needed somebody to step up and be a leader. He was fantastic today, I’m really proud of him and how he played, especially how he shook off a tough start and never let it get to him.”

Top-ranked Alabama (272-266=538, -22) remains atop the team standings and leads second-place South Carolina (277-278=555, -5) by 17 strokes. The Crimson Tide’s Bobby Wyatt (65-61=126) paces all golfers at 14-under par after finishing the second round with an impressive 61.

Texas A&M sophomore Ben Crancer (70-71=141, +1) carded birdies on two of his final five holes Saturday, leaving the Kirkwood, Mo., product with a share of 21st place.

A trio of Aggies recorded rounds of 74 with Johannes Veerman (72-74=146, +6), Adrià Arnaus (74-74=148, +8) and Andrew Lister (81-74=155, +15) ending play with shares of 47th, 57th and 68th places, respectively.

“As a team we’re struggling, especially off the tee,” Higgins added. “We’ve got three guys who are just hoping to put it in play. The course is set up as easy and benign as I’ve seen a championship course, but we’re scrambling to make pars. We put in some good work on the range after our round and hopefully we’ve got some things straighten out so we can put up a good final round tomorrow.”

The tournament concludes Sunday morning with the Aggies beginning their final round at 8 a.m. paired alongside golfers from Florida and Vanderbilt. Live scoring and tee times can be found at Golfstat.com.
