IOLA, Texas -- The Bulldogs begin a promising 2013 season with a new head coach.
Former assistant Pete Martinez takes over. Martinez has previous head coaching experience at Somerville, where he posted a 7-13 record in two seasons.
He has a lot of returning talent and a favorable schedule that should help the Bulldogs return to the playoffs for the second season in a row. Six starters return on offense, led by quarterback Hayden Martinez, who was honorable mention all-state as a sophomore. He will have three starters back on the line and two back at wide receiver to work with.
The Bulldog linebackers should lead the way on defense, led by Sam Milsap and Ryan Renick.
Martinez said, "The expectations are to get into the playoffs and definitely go further than we did this past year. The boys are working hard, they've worked hard all summer and they believe in themselves so we think we can get the job done."
Iola will play eight games at home this season, an advantage that could help them easily surpass their win total from a year ago. Getting two of three district games at Bulldog Stadium should go a long way in helping Iola content for the 11-1A Division I championship.
