Manziel Concerned Whether His "Free Lancing" Would Be Successful In SEC

BRYAN, TX -- During his playing days at Tivy High School in Kerrville, Johnny Manziel had a lot of success for the Antlers as a scrambling quarterback that loved to improvise. During his junior season Tivy made it to the Class 4A state semifinals. Then in his senior season the Antlers won a Bi-District championship, losing in the second round. In his final high school campaign he threw for 3,609 yards and 45 touchdowns and rushed for another 1,674 yards and 30 scores.

The odds on him scrambling around and having that same kind of success at the collegiate level was doubtful, but after rolling up over 4,600 yards of total offense, Manziel is a Heisman Trophy favorite.

Johnny is pleased his improvising this season has allowed the Aggies to post a 10 and 2 record and even he had doubts that his ability to "Free Lance" as he calls it has been as successful as it has.

"I didn't really know how all the free lancing that I did in high school would kinda, 'drop back and see what would happen kinda plays' would translate into college," said Manziel.

"It's such a big step and something I've worked on each day to kinda - not necessarily take out of my game, but play more within the system and that's the ultimate goal to do what Coach Kingsbury and Coach Sumlin want and hopefully the end result is winning football games."

Manziel has already been named a finalist for four prestigious post season awards (Maxwell, Davey O'Brien, Walter Camp, and Manning). Johnny will find out Monday at 5 that he's a finalist for this year's Heisman Memorial Trophy.
