Slocum Says Manziel's Freshman Status Should Be Positive In Heisman Voter's Eyes

BRYAN, TX -- It appears that the only way Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel doesn't win the 2012 Heisman Trophy is if voters hold his lack of experience against him. The Aggies' red shirt freshman quarterback has posted some impressive numbers this season. He's accumulated over 4,600 yards of total offense and been responsible for 43 touchdowns this season.

In the Aggies inaugural season in the SEC they knocked off defending national champion Alabama in Tuscaloosa and that win made him a front-runner to win this year's Heisman.

In the past some Heisman voters have been reluctant to pick a freshman for the award. But R.C. Slocum, the winningest coach in program history, feels Manziel's lack of experience in college football should be looked as a positive instead of a negative.

"I think that should be a plus the fact that he's a freshman," said Slocum. "He started the first conference game, the first game that he played against a top five team with one loss and to me it ought to be a plus. This kid steps out there and plays the way he plays and makes the plays and impact on his team that he's had."

Coach Slocum will kick off what will hopefully be a big week next week for the Texas A&M football program in New York City. Next Tuesday he'll be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and then Saturday it's hopeful that Johnny Manziel is named the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner.

Slocum isn't the only one that feels age shouldn't matter in the Heisman balloting, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops coached Adrian Peterson in 2004 when he finished second in voting — still the highest finish ever for a freshman.

"A player is a player, it shouldn't matter what age he is," Stoops said.
