TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) - Jeff Gordon grabbed the lead on the final
lap before holding off teammate Jimmie Johnson to win the UAW-Ford
500 at Talladega Superspeedway.
Gordon used the victory to regain the lead in the Nextel Cup
points chase with six races remaining. The four-time series champ
leads Johnson by nine points after overcoming a poor start in
Gordon started 34th and was 35th 78 laps into the race. He
smartly worked the draft and moved into the top 15 as the race
neared its completion. Gordon led just one lap in completing a
season sweep at the Alabama track.
It's the 12th restrictor-plate victory for Gordon, the most in
Dave Blaney was third, followed by Denny Hamlin and Ryan Newman.
