CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Chip Ganassi is making some crew switches in hopes of resuscitating his struggling NASCAR team.
Donnie Wingo, who has worked with Juan Pablo Montoya since the
driver's move to NASCAR midway through 2006, will now run Reed
Sorenson's Number-41 Dodge. And Jimmy Elledge leaves Sorenson after 80 races to run the Number-42 for Montoya.
Ganassi hasn't hidden his displeasure with his NASCAR teams this
season. He went public two weeks ago when Dario Franchitti
(fran-KEET'-ee) failed to qualify the Number-40 car for the race in
Texas. The car owner called the failure "pathetic" in a
blistering rant about his teams.
He held a team meeting last Monday and emerged from it believing
the organization was close to turning a corner, and Franchitti did
qualify for Saturday night's race in Phoenix. He finished 32nd.
But Sorenson crashed and ended up in 42nd place for his fifth
finish this year of 31st or worse. It dropped him to 31st in the
standings. Montoya finished 16th and is 17th in the standings. He's
still looking for his first top 10 of the season.
