OAKMONT, Pa. -- Nick Dougherty is making an early bid to
become the first Brit in 37 years to win the U-S Open. Dougherty
had three birdies on the back nine and is the first-round leader at
the 107th U-S Open at two-under-68. He leads Argentina's Angel
Cabrera by one shot.
Those are the only two golfers who bettered par on a
picture-perfect day for golf at Oakmont Country Club outside
Pittsburgh.
Two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal, Marcus Fraser and Bubba Watson are sitting at ven par. Sixteen players are 1-over including Tiger Woods, Vijay Sngh, Jim Furyk and defending champ Geoff gilvy.
Sergio Garcia shot himself out of contention with a 9-over 79.
And two-time U-S Open champion Retief Goosen, Masters
champion Zach Johnson and Colin Montgomerie are near the bottom of
the leader board at 6-over 76.
Phil Mickelson is playing with a sore wrist and shot a 4-over
74.
