The Texas A&M football team was ranked No. 7 in the preseason Top 25 by The Associated Press, which was released on Saturday.
It was the highest preseason AP ranking for the Aggies since 1999 when they also received a No. 7 preseason ranking. The Aggies, who open against Rice on Aug. 31, were 11-2 last season and posted a 41-13 win over Big 12 Co-Champion Oklahoma in the 2013 AT&T Cotton Bowl. A&M finished No. 5 in the AP poll last year, which was the Aggies’ highest final ranking since 1956. The Aggies have been ranked in 10 consecutive editions of the AP Top 25. Earlier this summer, the Aggies were ranked No. 6 in the USA Today coaches poll.
Texas A&M returns 11 starters from last year’s 11-win team, including a pair of first-team All-Americans in quarterback Johnny Manziel and offensive tackle Jake Matthews. The Aggies return six offensive starters and five starters on defense, as well as placekicker Taylor Bertolet.
A nation-leading six Southeastern Conference teams were ranked among the nation’s Top 25 by the AP, including five in the top-10. The Aggies’ 2013 schedule features games against top-ranked Alabama (Sept. 14 at Kyle Field) and No. 12 LSU (Nov. 23 at Baton Rouge, La.).
