Want to see raw horse power, hard ridin' and straight shootin'? Come on out to the Brazos County Expo this weekend and watch the Cowboy Mounted Shooters competition, February 23-24. The best time for spectators will be at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday when they'll be showcasing their talents and it’s free to the public.
The competition features cowboys and cowgirls, dressed in all the regalia, competing in this fast action timed event. The course is set with balloons on poles and pylons and the shooter uses two .45 caliber single action revolvers, each loaded with five rounds of specially prepared blank ammunition, and if successful, the shooter bursts the balloons with burning embers in the black powder blanks. Both speed and accuracy count in this competition.
Cowboy Mounted Shooting is the fastest growing equine sport in the nation. With 13,000 members, the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association is growing at a rate of 4.3 members a day. The Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association has a variety of levels of competition for everyone, ranging from novice levels to the seasoned professional. Men and women compete, as well as children who must be 12 or older with a parent or guardian.
