The Sam Houston State football team will once again play an SEC opponent in 2014 when they travel to LSU on Sept. 6, 2014. It will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.
Last year, the Bearkats played Texas A&M, losing 47-28 at Kyle Field, in their first matchup with an SEC opponent. The Kats and Aggies will hook up once again this season on Sept. 7.
The game with LSU will be the first in the newly renovated Tiger Stadium, with a capacity expected to be nearly 100,000. Last season LSU finished the year 10-3, falling to Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. They played in the 2012 BCS National Championship game and last won a national championship in 2008. This season, LSU enters the year ranked No. 12 in the Associated Press preseason poll.
As an athletic department, Sam Houston and LSU have very little history, despite being separated by about 300 miles. The SHSU men’s basketball team travelled to Baton Rouge in 1999, losing 85-67 to the Tigers. This past June, the Bearkat baseball team played in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional, losing 8-5 to the Tigers.
The women’s basketball team is 0-2 all-time against LSU, last playing the Tigers in 2003. The women’s soccer team faced LSU in 2006. The SHSU volleyball squad has faced LSU seven times, but not since 1986. The Bearkat softball team has had the most success, posting a 3-2 record, most recently beating the Tigers 1-0 in 2009.
