Sam Houston State catcher Anthony Azar has been named as the Southland Conference baseball Hitter of the Week, the league office announced Sunday.
Azar led the Bearkat offense to a three-game sweep of Central Arkansas to claim an outright Southland Conference title. The junior from The Woodlands, Texas (The Woodlands H.S.), ripped two doubles in Thursday night’s 5-1 win and drove in three runs in a 2-for-4 effort.
On Friday, Azar had three hits and an RBI, while catching Cody Dickson’s complete-game 4-0 shutout. He added another hit and RBI in Saturday’s 6-5 win.
In the three games, Azar was 6 for 12 with five RBI, three doubles and two runs scored. This is the second time he has been honored as hitter of the week (March 18).
Oral Roberts’ Alex Gonzalez received Pitcher of the Week honors. Gonzalez threw eight shutout innings and allowed three hits while striking out 13 and walking one.
Bearkat starting pitcher Cody Dickson was not honored as Pitcher of the Week after tossing a four-hit, complete-game shutout against Central Arkansas. Dickson struck out ten and didn’t issue any free passes.
