The Sam Houston bats came to life as they hit ten extra-base hits to beat Arkansas State 11-6 and win the series Sunday at Don Sanders Stadium.

Shortstop Carter Burgess was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, and three RBI. Burgess tripled in his first at bat as a part of a three-run second inning. He doubled in the fourth to drive in another run and doubled again in the sixth and scored a run.

Freshman first baseman Spence Rahm started the scoring for the Kats by hitting a leadoff homerun to leftfield in the second. Rahm finished 2-for-5 with two RBI. The Bearkats chased Red Wolf starter Adam Grantham after just 1 1/3.

The Bearkats scored in five different innings in the game and put up multiple runs in four of the five frames. The seven doubles they hit is the most by a Kat team at Don Sanders Stadium.

Andrew Godail started for the Kats and got into trouble in the third inning. After a leadoff base hit, two errors, a walk, and a sac fly Godail appeared to have an injury and was replaced by Logan Boyd after just 2 2/3 innings.

The freshman lefthander pitched 4 1/3 in relief allowing just two runs on four hits and two walks. Boyd struck out three and pitched nearly perfect fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.

Jason Simms pitched a scoreless eighth inning with one strikeout. Alan Scott struggled in the ninth after the leadoff runner reached on an error. He got two outs before issuing three consecutive walks and allowing two runs to score.

Michael Burchett replaced Scott and got the final out of the game.

Designated hitter Anthony Azar and second baseman Ryan Farney were both 2-for-4 with one RBI. Farney also scored three times. Right fielder Greg Olson was 2-for-4 in the game and scored in the second.

The Bearkats play at Rice Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Houston.
