The Sam Houston softball team opens its 2013 home schedule against Texas A&M Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Bearkat Softball Complex.

The Bearkat softball team has paired with Colleges Against Cancer, an SHSU campus student organization, for Cancer Awareness Day Wednesday.

T-shirts will be sold at the game for $12 to benefit the American Cancer Society. Lavender ribbons and informational post cards from the American Cancer Society will also be available for fans. Lavender is the color used for all cancer awareness.

Sam Houston, last year’s Southland Conference runner-up and this spring’s preseason favorite to win the league, started the new season with a 2-3 record at the Baylor Bear Invitational last weekend.

The Kats defeated Illinois State8-6 and Baylor 2-0 to highlight action in the tournament. Three Bearkats - Tori Benavidez, Alyssa Coggins and Hillary Adams – were named to the all-tournament team.

Texas A&M brings a 4-0 record to Huntsville Wednesday. The Aggies outscored their four opponents 33-7 in wins over Long Beach State, Wright State, Cal State-Bakersfield and No. 19 UCLA on a trip to California last week.
