Senior third baseman Shelbi Tucker’s grand slam home run in the opening inning powered Sam Houston State to an 8-2 victory over Houston Baptist Sunday, giving the Kats their first Southland Conference series sweep of the 2013 season.
The victory, Sam Houston’s fifth in a row, lifted the Bearkats to 9-6 in Southland Conference action and 23-18 for the year.
Haley Baros (7-7) hurled her fifth complete game of the season, striking out four of the 26 batters she faced and limiting the Huskies to four hits.
Just as in both game’s in Saturday’s doubleheader, Houston Baptist scored in the top of the first inning after a single by leadoff hitter Lauren Schwirtlich and a RBI singe by Melissa Herman.
Sam Houston responded with five runs in the bottom of the first as Hillary Adams’s sacrifice fly tied the game, scoring Tori Benavidez and Tucker blasted her eighth home run of the season over the center fied fence to score four more.
The Bearkats added three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after loading the bases with no outs. Tiffany Castillo was hit by a pitch to score one and Hillary Adams scored two more with a single.
Victoria Granchelli hit a solo home run for HBU in the seventh inning. Houston Baptist dropped to 13-16 for the year and 6-9 in Southland Conference pay.
Sam Houston’s next action is a three-game Southland series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi next Saturday and Sunday. The Kats return to Huntsville to face Nicholls State in their next home action April 20 and 21.
