Bearkat baseball beats Houston

HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Right fielder Jake Arrington went 2-for-4 with a home run and first baseman Ryan O’Hearn went 3-for-4 with a double as Sam Houston defeated Houston 5-4 in a non-conference baseball game at Don Sanders Stadium.

The Bearkats avenged a 12-2 loss to the Cougars on March 13 in Houston. Since that loss, Sam Houston has won 17 of their last 20 games while UH as gone 6-13.

Arrington and third baseman Kevin Miller led off the bottom of the second inning with consecutive singles. Arrington scored on a ground out by first baseman Ryan O’Hearn and Miller tallied on a single by second baseman Jessie Plumlee. Left fielder Luke Plucheck added a third run on a single to third base that scored Plumlee.

Starter Michael Oros shut out the Cougars for four innings, striking out four batters while giving up only two hits to the 18 batters he faced.

Houston scored its first run off relief pitcher Jordan Bunch in the top of the fifth on a two-out single by first baseman Codey Morehouse. The hit scored left fielder Michael Pyeatt who reached first on a fielder’s choice then stole second base.

The Cougars got another run in the top of the sixth after designated hitter Jonathan Davis walked, then scored on a double by second baseman Jake Runte. Arrington save another run with a diving catch at the right field line for the third out of the inning.

Arrington led off the bottom the seventh by parking a ball down the right field line for his third home run of the season to pad the Kat lead to 4-2.

Houston catcher John Cannon led off the eighth with a double, was sacrificed to third and scored on a ground out by Davis to get the Cougars back within one run.

Shortstop Corey Toups tripled to lead off the bottom of the eighth and scored on a ground ball by Plucheck to put the Kats back up by two, 5-3.

A leadoff double by center fielder Landon Appling and an RBI single by Morehouse got the Cougars back within one in the top of the ninth.

But Michael Burchett picked up his five save of the season with strike out, a fly out and a ground out to end the game.
