Bearkats Drop Pair in Texas Shootout Softball Tournament

SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Sam Houston dropped a pair of close games on the first day of the Bearkats' competition in the Texas Shootout softball tournament at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos Friday.

The Kats fell to Texas-Arlington 2-1 then were shutout by Baylor 2-0
Third baseman Maggie Michele's two -run homer to left field proved to be the difference in the tournament opening loss to UTA.

Junior pitcher Shelby Lancaster posted her third complete game of the young 2013 season, giving up only four hits in seven innings. She faced 28 batters in the game, striking out two.

Designated player Hillary Adams gave the Bearkats a first inning 1-0 lead with an RBI single to center. The hit scored second baseman Alyssa Coggins who opened the inning with a bunt single, then reached third on a pair of ground outs.

Sam Houston totaled seven hits, leaving eight runners stranded in the game. Catcher Ashley Isbell went 3-for-3 including a double.
Baylor pitcher Heather Stearns limited Sam Houston to two hits Friday afternoon's 2-0 loss to the Bears. Coggins and first baseman Kim Damian accounted for the Kats' hits.

Haley Baros was the losing pitcher, giving up nine hits to the 30 batters she faced in six innings.

Baylor scored solo runs in the bottom of the second and third innings on RBIs by Stearns and shortstop Jordan Strickland.
The Bearkats drop to 5-8 for the year.
