HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Sam Houston State football team opened up preseason practice Monday night at Bowers Stadium. The Bearkats will hold 29 practices leading up to the season opener against Houston Baptist on August 31.
Sam Houston is looking to back to Frisco to play in the Football Championship Subdivision National Title game for the third straight season. Bearkat head coach Willie Fritz says the work the team puts in before the season will be a big in trying to get back to Frisco. "Where it really helps is identifying and evaluating our players seeing who the new guys are that are going to be playing for us, refining skills in some of our veterans. Really building your team and laying the foundation for the season." Preseason All-American running back Timothy Flanders agrees the road to Frisco begins right now. " We are back out here really trying to get back to our practice tempo. We are going to come out here these first couple of days trying to pick up the speed, try to get started fast. We can't start over from where we left off in the spring. I know we had a real good spring so we are trying to build on from that."
The Bearkats will have three scheduled scrimmages on August 12, 17 and 21 during their preseason camp that runs through August 23. After that the team will begin their regular-season preparation for the season opener against Houston Baptist.
